Since 2012, several researchers, including Susan Aasman and Andreas Fickers, question how “changing technologies of cultural production (film, video or digital camera) have shaped new practices and ritual of memory staging”. Entitled Changing Platforms of Ritualized Memory Practices: The Cultural Dynamics of Home Movies, this project resulted in the organisation of two exhibitions open to the general public.
“Home cinema: from projector to smartphone” is held from May 27 till October 30, 2016 at the Limburgs Museum, a cultural and regional history museum in the south east of the Netherlands. Home movies from the museum’s collections and numerous objects (projectors, cameras, magazines…) allow visitors to discover several inventions and practices.
In Belgium, amateur cinema is celebrated at the House of Alijn (Ghent). Since 2004, this museum of 20th century everyday life has preserved home movies. It houses the exhibition «Homeless movies » from June 26, 2016 to January 15, 2017. The artist, Jasper Rigole, exhibits his private home movie collection, bought second-hand, and the way he has developed a classification of these images. In October 2016, six young visual artists will present new works from the museum’s home movies collections throughout the city.
