Diffusion | Screening and lecture "Monaco and the sea"

“Monaco in film” – the name for Monaco’s Institut Audiovisuel and its cycle of Screenings and Lectures – is to showcase film representations of Monaco using fiction and documentary, newsreel and amateur film. Montage and commentary will provide a more transversal reading of history. Close collaboration with the Monaco Archives du Palais brings an additional wealth of archive material highlighting new perspectives of the principality’s history and its relationship with the sea in the upcoming screening/lecture.

Amateur film is often better than classic TV reporting at narrating family beach outings, walks along the shore, sporting events and clubs’ leisure activities. It is also an opportunity to remember that one of Monaco’s earliest amateur filmmakers was Prince Albert I who left a significant collection of films documenting his marine science research. Representations of the principality are also showcased via some remarkable documentary and fiction films made by the Cinéam amateur film collective. Through their work we will go back to Monaco in the 1960s and 1970s, a turning point when Prince Rainier III’s redevelopment of the coastline expanded Monaco’s surface area into the sea.

The screening/lecture is scheduled for Friday 7th June 2019 at 7pm at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
