TWST - Things We Said Today
16 mm black and white footage from American television and 8 mm color home moviesA film by : Andrei Ujică, France, 2024, 91 minutesProduction : Les Films du Camélia, Modern Electric Pictures, Tangaj ProductionMore informationsAndrei Ujică, director of The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu (2010), takes on a very different subject in this film but still displays the same fondness for archive material—from news footage to home movies.
It’s 13 August 1965 in New York City, and the Beatles (the title of Ujică’s film is derived from one of their songs) will be performing at Shea Stadium the following weekend. We see their fans jostle in the streets, hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols. This dynamic impression of an era then abruptly broadens its perspective with images from the Watts riots in Los Angeles, which were ignited by rage about racism and police violence. Meanwhile, New Yorkers relax in the park or dance the twist. We see someone in Harlem stating his opinion, and a fan visiting the New York World’s Fair on his way to the concert. Two young witnesses—an aspiring writer and the aforementioned Beatles fan—appear in the form of drawings. They are given a voice by actors reading journal entries as well as extracts from a story by Ujică himself, adding creativity and a poetic touch to the otherwise unembellished realism.

Certitudinea probabilităților (Certainty of Probabilities)
Archives coming from the former state-run Alexandru Sahia non-fiction film studio.A film by : Raluca Durbacă, Romania, 2021, 90 minutesProduction : Icon ProductionMore informationsAs an instrument of ideological domination, language, both verbal and visual, defines, describes, delimits and dissimulates the manner in which the social, political and economic reality of a society is perceived. In order to critique a dominant group’s ideology, one must fragment and recontextualize its discourse. THE CERTAINTY OF PROBABILITIES seeks such a critique. Comprised entirely of archival footage produced during 1968, one of the most optimistic and prosperous years in the history of socialist Romania by the most important state-run documentary film studio, this essay film surveys the efforts undertaken by the state in order to ensure social stability in a society claiming to have quashed all exploitative and alienating labour relations.

Marcelle and Emma met in the mid-1920s. Secretly, love blossomed between the two teenage girls, but after two years they parted ways. Marcelle developed tuberculosis and was admitted to a sanatorium, where she wrote many letters to Emma, letters that still burn with great evocative power. Milos revisited – ΕΠΙΣΤΡΟΦΗ ΣΤΗ ΜΗΛΟ
Collection Agathocles CypriotisA film by : Nikos Alpantakis, Greece, 2009, 80 minutesProduction : Ironick Ltd – Archeio BooksMore informationsThis is a documentary film based on archive footage of colour 8mm film of the late 50s that comes from a totally unknown family archive. The films were shot by Agathocles Cypriotis (1910-1978), a non-famous but great cinematographer of the 50s, who did not have the opportunity to complete his work. His films are presented for the first time in public. Cypriotis is portrayed through his own films and through present day interviews of people that knew him well and feature in those old archive films. His strange biography serves as a plot as well as an introduction to many issues. Agathocles Cypriotis was a well-cultivated Athenian who served the leftist partisan group of ELAS during WWII, but later -because of the Greek civil war that followed- left the communist party and in 1946 settled to Milos Island (Cyclades) for reasons that remain partly unknown. He worked there as chief director of the Barite Factory and stayed until 1962. During this period, he helped his workers in building and organizing their own village (Pollonia) and supported the villagers in any need of them. He absolutely shared his life with theirs and got married to a Milian woman. Their only child was born there. During his stay in Milos Agathocles Cypriotis incessantly filmed the everyday life of the locals in colour 8mm film. His first shooting was realized in 1956 and the last one in 1962. He attempted to fully record every person, fact or place that was part of his life or of Milos life at the time (during the eight hours of the original colour 8mm archive films there is a defile of more than 120 persons / portraits). After 17 years things changed abruptly and in 1962 Agathocles Cypriotis left the island under circumstances that still remain unclear -a taboo for those who know the truth, a myth for those who ignore it. His death that occurred some years later left many questions unanswered as well as a lot of valuable films hidden on a family drawer. A.C.’s life has been tightly connected to Milos. Probably because 99% of his films had been shot there, it is as if he did not exist before or after his stay on the island.

Free fall (Private Hungary 10)
A film by : Forgács Péter, Hungary, 1996, 75 minutesMore informations“Free fall” reflects to the times before the Shoah, the darkest chapter of the 20th century Hungary, based on the home movies of the talented musician, photographer and businessman, György Pető who made 8mm films from 1938. Algeria (1954-1962), soldiers behind the camera
Collection ECPAD, Ciclic (Centre Val de Loire), Cinémathèque de Bretagne, Forum des images, MIRA (Alsace), Cinémathèque de Nouvelle Aquitaine, Trafic ImageA film by : Bertin-Maghit Jean-Pierre, France, 2018, 65 minutesProduction : La Chambre aux FresquesMore informationsThe Algerian war, and its intensification, led more and more young Frenchmen into the unknown. They sometimes took a camera with them for souvenirs, but some, very few, took a camera to film their stay there. Their images are exceptional because they’re so rare. Whereas today a mobile phone is enough to film an event, Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit wanted to understand how, 60 years ago, a soldier plunged into the heart of the conflict could take his camera and why? In this film, he meets four ex-soldiers who are amateur filmmakers. They answer him in front of their images. The film allows us to experience this historical moment at a human level.
